When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3-4)
Have you ever struggled with an issue or worried about something for days or weeks, only to see God show up and take care of it in a very obvious way, then say to yourself, “Why did I get so worked up about that?” After we see God in action we feel more secure in God, we stand a little taller and face the world with a bit more zeal. Then life starts to pile up on you…the washing machine breaks down, your kid gets sick, you have a bad day at work, and before long you are in a funk again.
It seems like we allow our image of God and His power to shrink. God is big when things are going great, but sometimes He gets smaller when the cares of this world pile up. This happened to Job after his world fell apart, and God had a review session (Job 38) and reminded Job of among other things, who laid the earth’s foundation, who fixed the limits of the sea and who keeps the constellations in order.
Sometimes when we feel powerless, we need to remind ourselves of how big and powerful our God is:
-God spoke the universe into existence. (Gen 1)
-God appoints the sun to shine by day, decrees the moon and stars to shine by night and stirs up the sea so that its waves roar. (Jeremiah 31:35)
-God stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth (Isaiah 51:13)
-God set the moon and stars in place (Psalm 8:3) and guides their movements (Job 38:31)
Then we need to remember that this mighty and formidable God, whom no one or thing can stand against, is mindful of us and cares for us. (Psalm 8:4) He wants to be involved in our lives and wants to take on all our burdens and worries.
If you are burdened and feel like God can’t or doesn’t want to handle your problems, do exactly as Psalm 55:22 directs us, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.”
