Raise Your Spiritual Temperature

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)

My mom had an interesting and effective method of pest control in our house when I was a kid. She didn’t bring in an exterminator to kill the various bugs, ants and spiders hiding out in the unreachable places of the house. She didn’t set out ant traps, fly strips or anything of the like. Mom used a “bomb.” This was not an explosive device, but it was devastating to the six legged tenants in the house…here is how it worked:

Step 1: Put all food items away and cover the kitchen counter, table, furniture etc.
Step 2: Place the aerosol can of “Bug Bomb” in the middle of the room.
Step 3: Pull the trigger on the can to release all its contents, and GET OUT quickly while it fumigated the house.
Step 4: Come back an hour later and sweep up all the bugs that the bug spray forced out of their hiding places and died in the middle of the floor.

Believe it or not, there is a spiritual application here, which is this: If you want to get the sin out of your life, the most effective approach is to change your spiritual environment to one that is not conducive to sin. The Bug Bomb wasn’t intended to be sprayed at the individual bugs that could be seen; it changed the entire environment in the house into one that was uninhabitable for bugs.

The same approach is taken to remove impurities in food. One of the primary reasons meat is cooked is to kill any bacteria that may be hiding inside. We know that the best way to make food safe is heat it to a certain temperature at which the invisible microorganisms cannot survive, in other words, we change the environment to one that is uninhabitable.

The point is this: The best way to get the sin out of your life (even the ones you are not aware of) is to change your environment to one that is not conducive to sin and makes sin less appealing. Don’t try to weed out the sin in your life on your own, or in the flesh. After all, it’s your flesh that got you into this mess in the first place. Instead, change your environment to one that is full of the stuff that makes it hard to sin such as listening to Christian music in your car, at work or on your iPod, sign up for a free daily email devotional, set your internet homepage to a ministry website, go to church whenever the doors are open, get to know other believers and talk to them regularly, and sign up for free magazines that ministries send out.

I guarantee that as you surround yourself with the things of God, the sin you struggle with will become less and less appealing.
