For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14)
Here are a few questions for you to consider: Are you sanctified? How do you get sanctified, and how long does it take? What does it mean to be sanctified?
Let’s start with the definition of sanctify, which means “…to set apart to a sacred purpose, to free from sin, to impart sacredness, making one impossible to violate.” All through the Old Testament we find scriptures about the sanctification of everything from people, fixtures in the temple, garments, and fields to the tabernacle, animal sacrifices and the Sabbath. In doing this, God was identifying things to be “set apart for a sacred purpose,” in most cases for exclusive service to Him.
The sanctification process also involved the cleansing and purging of impurities from these items. Anything that was to be offered to or used by God needed to be free from spot or blemish.
How do you get sanctified? If you have made Jesus Lord of your life, your sanctification process started the moment you were saved, and you have been “set apart for a sacred purpose.” Think about that…everyone in the Kingdom has a unique, specific and sacred purpose that only they can fulfill. There are no “movie extras” who are supposed to just walk around in the background. Everyone has a role to fulfill and a job to do.
Ephesians 5:26 further explains that Jesus sanctifies and cleanses us by the “washing of water by the word.” I believe this means that as we get into the Word, the Word will get into us and continually purge, cleanse and purify us from the inside out by illuminating the dark corners of our lives where sin resides and showing us how to get rid of that sin.
Finally, the last question: “Are you sanctified?” If you can’t answer that question, you can settle the matter right now by acknowledging Jesus as your Savior, and asking Him to come into your life and set you free from sin. If you answered yes to the last question, are you actively working at the sacred purpose God set you apart for? If you don’t know what your purpose is, ask God…I guarantee that He knows and will be happy to share it with you.
“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
