My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. (1 John 2:1-2)
Since Jesus finished His work here on earth He has not been in retirement; He has been working long hours as our counselor, attorney and advocate in heaven. He is currently seated at the right hand of God interceding on behalf of all believers. When we hear the word intercession, most people think only of prayer, but think of intercession as someone voluntarily putting themselves in the middle of a situation that offers no benefit to them…they willingly interject themselves and don’t expect anything in return.
Unlike legal professionals in our society today, who offer a service in return for a fee, Jesus not only pleads our case to the Father and expects no payment in return; He actually paid the price for our sins in advance! One might even say that Jesus is all about intercession; He willingly left heaven and came into our world, voluntarily died on the cross for our sins, and has spent the better part of the past two thousand years reviewing cases, stamping all the sins of believers as “PAID IN FULL”.
Now, before we go any further, let’s not get the idea that it is OK to sin…that God understands. The author of 1 John prefaces his description of Jesus’ role of advocate by saying “I am writing this to you so that you will sin not.” (Read Hebrews 10:26-31 to understand how God views sin.)
Make no mistake, GOD HATES SIN, but He loves you so much that he made a way for you into heaven. John 3:16-17 says “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
If you are dealing with a tough situation in your life, talk to Jesus about it. He doesn’t want to judge you; He is waiting for your call and wants to take your case for free.
