Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day. (Ruth 3:18)
“Take the bull by the horns….Control your destiny…Buy now and pay later….You can drive this car home TODAY!” are a few phrases commonly heard that indicate that we live in a culture that encourages action and immediate results over patience and waiting.
I am as guilty as anyone in this particular area. I have a talent (sometimes a bad habit) of MAKING THINGS HAPPEN, which has landed me in trouble several times. I would wager that most of us can think of a situation when we pulled some strings, dropped some hints, or pushed some buttons to MAKE something happen instead of waiting on God to do it.
When God commissioned the writing of the Bible, He included several examples of what happened when His people chose their own course of action instead of waiting for Him. Remember “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.”
-Saul disobeyed the prophet’s instructions and hurried up the sacrifice so he could go to war. As a result God took away his kingdom. (1 Samuel 13)
- In Isaiah 30, “Woe to the obstinate children," declares the LORD, "to those who carry out plans that are not mine…everyone will be put to shame.”
-Jesus rebuked Peter sharply in Matthew 8:33 with “"Get behind me, Satan! You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
If you are facing a difficult situation in your life, no matter how urgent the circumstances may appear, I encourage you to ask God to take care of the situation, give the situation to Him (and don’t pick it back up), then have the FAITH to WAIT on God to take care of it. Use the following scriptures to strengthen your faith:
This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: "In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15)
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
Thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me. (Isaiah 49:23)
For an example of the right way to handle a tough situation, study 2 Chronicles 20, when a vast army threatened to destroy the nation of Judah. King Jehoshapat got it right when he prayed “we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.”
