It obvious this is an awesome Psalm, one of the most poetic group of verses probably in the history of mankind and is just thru and thru magnificently poetic. Verse 6 says" Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to obtain. " This admission is only a concession to reality, and we can see throughout this psalm that God is figuring things out from the beginning and all along.
Although the psalmist throughout admits throughout that he couldn't possibly know some of God's wonders, this is not the reality of the whole of the psalm is saying. In proverbs it says" We don't know what a day will bring forth" Our knowledge base is limited and we can only work within these confines. Verse 17 says, " How precious to me are your thoughts" Although the psalmist is showing the balance of the relationship is all towards God, he is able to say that the Lord's thoughts are something he can recognize and fully contemplate to the point of which he can say they are precious to him. By some of the things that may have happened in your prayer life and what you can observe in your meditations on creation, you can see that God has thought of you personally and has had more than one thought you could observe about you. From this verse, we could ask God in prayer what His thoughts are pertaining to this matter or that matter as it affects either us as individuals or whatever issue we are praying about that might be more intercessory in nature. Although this psalm as a whole clearly defers to God's sovereignty and God's sovereign creation, the amazing thing is that we can contemplate some of the very thoughts of God within our own thoughts and this is a big part of what prayer is all about. Not only can we think and meditate on God's thoughts, we can count them as precious to us and can value and appreciate them even though we are indeed part of his creation. This very powerful verse is indicative of fellowship with the Supreme Lord.
God's thoughts towards David are quite numerous; verse 18 says" Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand." He couldn't count them, but here he is saying he could start to count them. Here again is evidence that the author of this psalm David can observe any number of God's thoughts towards him personally and isolate on them enough that they could be counted one by one.
Verse 23 says, “Search me oh God, and know my heart, test me and know my anxious thoughts." Again, this parallels to the idea that God and the psalmist are communicating in the realm of thought. “He is asking for a continuation of what he acknowledges has already been started by the Lord, that he has been the object of the Lord's search from the very beginning, and is asking that the closeness of this search be continued.
Where can I go from your Spirit, where can I flee from your presence?" This verse is important in that it points out the presence of the Holy Spirit, the presence we need to call upon in the midst of any number of situations and circumstances of our lives in the very moment. Fleeing itself is representative of something that would often happen in the moment. We should ask the Holy Spirit to protect us in all that we do as there are many unforeseen dangers for anyone and our ultimate reliance is upon the presence of the Holy Spirit.
