Love Enough To Say "No"

A few weekends ago my wife, youngest daughter, and I spent some time together shopping and getting ready for school. I was appalled at some of the behavior children displayed. Several were demanding unnecessary “back-to-school” items. Other children, not yet ten, were dressed like fashion queens looking to impress someone. I wondered how much effort and money were spent to pull off such an image.

Perhaps what saddened me most was the realization that these parents were obviously willing to give their children frivolous back-to-school items and fashion-forward clothing. Hopefully most parents would prefer their children not be caught up in trendy, sensual fashions or be outfitted with unnecessary back to school items.

So, why does a parent “give in” to their child, going against their better judgment and caving into pressure from the young child he or she is to be guiding and directing?

I think it is a lack of love. Yes, a lack of love!

Love enables us to turn away from what is easy or comfortable so that what is best can prevail. Love is the motivation behind saying “no” when we wish we could say “yes”. Love drives us to teach, train and invest in our children despite the difficulties and effort. No one wants to disappoint their child. No one wants to say “no”. But love compels us.

The next time you find yourself in a struggle and know it is best for your child to say “no”. Comfort yourself in knowing you love them enough to do what is right!
