Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Chris is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11
As Christians we need to truly understand what it means to use the name of Jesus appropriately and the power and authority that His name carries. Paul told the Philippians that God appointed Jesus to the highest place of authority and power and gave Him a name that all of creation must submit to.
Jesus has this authority and position in the Kingdom because “by Him were all things created…and He is before all things and by him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:16) If we understand that He was given this authority from the beginning of time and that He will be called Lord of Lords and King of Kings at His return, it shouldn’t be a stretch to believe that His name and the authority that goes with it are the same today.
Why could Jesus simply command sickness and demons to leave someone? Because of the position of authority that God exalted Him to. Everything in creation must come under submission to the name of Jesus. We find an example of how powerful the name of Jesus is in John 18; when Jesus asked the soldiers that came to arrest Him who they were looking for, they said “Jesus of Nazareth.” When Jesus responded, “I am,” they were all knocked to the ground because “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” Jesus speaking His own name (remember God referred to Himself as I AM in Exodus 3:14) was so powerful that this group of soldiers was unable to stand it.
This helps us understand the importance of “in my name” when Jesus tells us “whatsoever you ask for in my name, I will do it” (John 14:13) and that “in my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”(Mark 16:17-18)
All the power in the world is in His name.
