We Are Not In Control

by

David Moukon, BChM

“And He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:39 KJV)

You have certainly heard many people asking this question ‘why?’ maybe after a tragic event has happen: lost of a family member, a friend, a spouse or a child. It is on the mind of the human being. He was made so to ask questions; questions about his origin, questions about his life and questions about his destination.

When we think about the destination of man we also think about how he is heading to that destination. But before getting there he begins by asking where am I coming from, why am I here and where am I going?

It is very interesting that we have been given the potentials and the ability to reason, which makes us unique and totally different from other creatures. Therefore looking into our nature and the characteristics of our being, we are propelled to ask questions and any question that comes in our mind certainly has an origin that we should never avoid looking through.

It is very interesting that when we begin to ask questions we also begin to understand how far we can go in our humanity, in our quest for meaning. It’s of course obvious that all the questions that we ask do not always find rational answers. Isn’t that a clear sign of the human limitations? We hardly recognize that we are finite, limited and that we can never go beyond a certain scope of our imagination.

Most of the time we fail to admit that we can not have rational answers to the questions that we ask. The main reason is that we have develop our personality to the extent that we exalt ourselves, seek the approbation of men and the world, we want to be recognize and in the long run we want to be worshipped and adored, therefore setting ourselves on a pedestal, tapping ourselves on the back saying: It is all about me, I made it, It’s me and only me.

We have seen this happening in many different scenes at the leadership levels as well as at the social, scientific and religious levels. How many times have we seen a political leader claiming to bring peace in a country? Many times. Have they succeeded? I am sending the question back to you. How many times have we heard a medical doctor, scientist or researcher coming out to claim that he has discover a vaccine against such and such disease? Many times. But we still see many people dying and we ask ourselves ‘Why?”. The question hits the religious environment too. Have we never heard church leaders claiming that they would make us prosperous if we abide by the principles that they teach us?

What happened after we followed the political leader, the scientist and after we did what the preacher asked? Our condition never changed.

So we have been “good” in looking for solutions to problems, bringing good ideas and making nice proposals and claims that never brought a lasting solution to human dilemma: suffering, sicknesses, diseases, death…and the resounding question jumps at our daily heartbeat: why?

Instead of acknowledging that we are limited, frail and unable to achieve anything on our own, we have persistently gone further into our illusion and deception, infecting the generation of today which in its turn will infect the next one. And until something is done today and now, we will never see lives changed.

Therefore only one option remains. Because we have no answer to the solution of the world and that all our attempt have never been the result of our human and limited carnal and temporary ability, it is time to move forward to the highest source of wisdom.

The “why” thus becomes the business of the One who made the Heavens and the Earth and all that is in it and who has the liberty to do what He wants, how He wants, where He wants, when He wants and why He wants, even our Heavenly Father. Only He controls the “why”. You and I have no control of the “why”. We are not in control. But He is and the “why” quietly rests in His arms.
