Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the
ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and
man became a living being. (Gen 2:7, KJV)
The Aramic translation of the Hebrew scripture (Onkeles Targum) says
that the spirit of life (living soul) means a speaking spirit. One of
the rabbis - who uses the Aramaic term to deducing what its Hebrew
equivalent says - tags the follow to it:
“The impact of the soul that God gave to man, which made him different
from all other living beings within the totality of creation, was
speech. This, then, would imply that, unlike many of our other physical
abilities, our ability of speech is “rooted” high up in the spiritual
realm. Indeed, speech is not merely another tool to help mankind
function in the physical world, like walking, or like the use of our
thumbs. Speech itself is indicative of our whole raison d’etre...” .
(Rabbi Winstone: Geulah L'Geulah Pesach)
Does God consider us as living being because of our ability of speech?
Or so to speak, are we able to speak because of the spirit of life
(living soul) has been planted into us by our Creator? Is that what the
rabbi says? Isn't it sounds odd? But let accept it for a second as our
starting point in this short commentary and let's see to where we get
with it.
Then what kind of human speak we are talking about? Surely, not any kind
of it. Nor the speech in general sense. It must be a special one. It
must be only the uttered Word of God. Only that kind of speaking spirit
could be equivalent to the spirit of life. Any other human speech
transfers nothing supernatural or transfers the spirit of dead, which
has nothing to do with God.
If we are right, than the spirit of speech, that is the living soul
(spirit of life) and the Word of God all the same. In deed Apostle John
in his first letter wrote: “three are who are testifying in the heaven,
the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these - the three - are
one”. And here is another scripture “In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.” So the Word (the
spirit of life and the living soul, that is the spirit of speech) is God
Himself.
Let us move further. When Moses presented the Law to God's people, he
commented it in such way:
'For it [Law] is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and
through this thing ye shall prolong your days.” (Deut 32:47, KJV)
In KJV the “thing” is the translation of Hebrew “dabar” which means
“word”. That is “...it [the Word] is your life”, said Moses to
Israelites, “and through this [words] you shall prolong your earthly
life”. Moses referred us to the Holy Law when he spoke about the words.
But the word (which is the spirit of life) as we have been known since
the time of New Testament, could not restrict to Law. “If I speak with
the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am become
sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal” said Paul. And he went on: “if I
have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am
nothing.” which means it was not faith the original spirit of life
(living soul). Nor the solidarity or devotion: ”And if I bestow all my
goods to feed `the poor', and if I give my body to be burned, but have
not love, it profiteth me nothing.” (1Cor 13:15-17 ASB). Not the Law,
nor faith or devotion was the “original” spirit of speech or spirit of
life which God breathed to Adam. Then what was that? It was love, the
heavenly one, agape. From that time when God breathed into Adam nostrils
the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being we have been
capable to feel and express the heavenly love, agape to each other. And
Jesus says: God is love.
Imagine the moment when a human being first uttered some kind and loving
word breaking forth from his bottom of heart filled with love. He spoke
life to others and revived them. And like a wildfire multiplied and
divided the new spirit among the people. It surly happened long time
ago, but it was the first sign of the spirit of life was breathed to a
living creature by God. And a new race was born at that second, the
spiritually live mankind. No any other earthly creature capable to speak
love to each other. They might capable to communicate but without love,
without the spirit of heavenly, eternal life. It is our gift and
privilege from God. When we do it we are alive, when we are speaking
dead we are dead and the spirit of life outruns.
Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile. (Psalm
34:13) Speak love which gives and prolongs life. We are obliged to speak
life to each other because that is why we are humans alive. When you
speak dead, your are dead in God eye. Do not kill others with your
tongue. Watch your mouth. The most effective way to do this is speaking
from the bottom of our heart which has been filled up with Love before
you open up your mouth. So you surely speak life anytime.
