The Bible and You
As a believer in Christ you may find yourself with a desire to be in the Word of God; the Bible. To know who God you must read His book. When you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, His Spirit who now dwells in you, wants to reveal Himself to you through His Word. When a soldier enlists in the Army he receives a training manual and as a soldier in Christ you also have received your training manual; the Bible. Without it you will be like a ship without a rudder or in the wilderness without a compass.
Our Lord loves you and wants you to know Him. You have been given a great privilege to sit at the feet of the most-high God and have fellowship with Him by reading and studying His Word. None before Christ had this opportunity for the Holy Spirit had not yet been given. God graciously reveals Himself to us in His Word and invites us to enjoy the full counsel of who He is. He speaks and communicates to us through His Word and His communication of choice is the Bible.
Example of How God Reveals Himself in Scripture
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Then God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So, the evening and morning were the first day.
First five verses of the Bible
What can we learn about God in these first five verses of the Bible?
- He is the creator, He creates.
- He created something from nothing.
- Implication of the Trinity. (God creates, Christ spoke into existence and the Holy Spirit is the agent by which it was carried out.
- He is a God of order.
- He is faithful to carry out his plan based on what He sees, hears, and knows.
- He knows the beginning from the end.
- Nothing is impossible for God.
Is that not Amazing! In just the first five verses of the Bible God has revealed these truths about Himself. As you go through the pages of His Word you will find they are rich with the revelation of Himself. Just think of it you have only gone through five verses! Not even a full page. He has much more He would like to share with you.
God desire is that you grow to maturity. For that to be accomplished you must feed on His Word. Anyone who is a new, young or older Christian needs nourishment but it is especially important for a new or young Christian. As an infant need’s milk a young Christian also needs the pure milk of the Word.
Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the Word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation. If you have tasted the kindness of the Lord
(2 Peter 2:2-3)
Read the Bible
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the Tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
Would you go days, weeks or months without feeding on the Word of God? Sadly, some Christians do and are malnourished as a result. Anorexia Nervosa is a terrible thing. A person with this condition looks at themselves in a mirror and believes they are overweight. They reject the nourishment their bodies need, and in some cases will starve themselves to death, but Christians who reject spiritual nourishment have a spiritual problem. They look in their spiritual mirror and believe they look healthy, but they are emaciated, starving and in need of food.
So, can you be a Christian for many years and be an immature believer? Most definitely, yes. The opposite of growth is stagnation. What’s worse is we become Bible illiterate even our prayer life will be affected. How so? If you don’t know God requests and supplications will become a point of frustration for you may find yourself asking wrongly. Unbeknownst to you your prayers will be about you instead of praying in the will of God. How do you pray to a God you haven’t spent time getting to know? Again, He reveals Himself to us in His Word. This is the benefit of having a personal relationship with Him.
Reject knowing God
When we reject the knowing of God we are standing on dangerous ground.
Let’s look at an example in the Old Testament.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (Hosea 4:6)
A little background on this verse. The tribe of Levi had been chosen by God to be His priests. One of the duties they were charged with was teaching the people of Israel His Word. At the time they were to teach the people using the first five books of the Bible who had been penned by Moses. There were no other books, but as you learned earlier there is much you can learn much from just a few verses.
The problem was the priests had become corrupt and were no longer feeding the people the Word of God. ‘My people are being destroyed or ruined for lack of knowledge. In other word’s they could not fulfill what God had for them and because the priests rejected the knowing of God so did the people. They become stagnate and could not be used by God. They had fallen into dangerous error regarding His Word and went in a direction away from God.
Wind of doctrine
They were tossed by every wind of doctrine. (Turn to Ephesians 4:13-15)
to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Did you know that as you grow towards maturity God expects you to teach others about the truths of His Word. Not in the traditional sense of a Bible teacher but knowledge that you have gained to share with your family, other Christians, and with those who are not. A funny thing about filling yourselves with the Word of God the Holy Spirit begins to build an inventory of scripture that will be brought to your remembrance at the proper time for your edification and for the edification of others.
Trails and temptations
Lastly, as just stated, being full of God’s Word will get you through every trial and temptation that you will ever face in your walk with the Lord. Let me give you an example. Let’s say you are facing a problem or a task that seems impossible. Since you are regularly in the Bible you know that thought is impossible. The Holy Spirit would bring to your remembrance this scripture.
Maybe you are going through a job change and are not sure of your abilities to be successful in your new job or your going through something that is challenging and you don’t know if you can do it. The Holy Spirit might bring this scripture to mind.
10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your[a] care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to [b]be abased, and I know how to [c]abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through [d]Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:10-16)
Or perhaps your dealing with something involving yourself or your family. The death of a loved one your having a tough time dealing with. You don’t understand and are not happy with the outcome. The Holy Spirit might bring this Scripture to mind.
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:27-28)
The point being, If your not regularly in the Word of God, the Bible, you do not have an inventory of Scripture the Holy Spirit can bring to you your remembrance so you are left to yourself. Please don’t mistake me. If you belong to Christ He will get you through anything you will go through, He loves you and will never leave you or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
These Scriptures I have shared with you are called “The Promises of God” There are many and they can only be found in His book, the Bible. He wants you to know everyone of them. He knows this will give you spiritual muscle and give you the strength to stand in times of trouble. He desires to strengthen your faith not weaken it.
God’s love letter
Many have called the Bible Gods love letter, but to know Him you must belong to Him. If the Holy Spirit is going to bring Scripture to your remembrance it can only be through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. A sinner saved by grace. Only then does His Holy Spirit come and dwell within you.
1 Corinthians 1:18 says, the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
To expect anyone to accept and receive the truth of the gospel, let alone understand the Bible apart from Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit is foolish. The things of the Bible will seem silly and ridiculous. The Bible opens up to us when we have been born again and desire the things of God. Apart from Christ it is impossible, but as His Word says, “All things are possible with God.” As is this time being set before you.
Jesus died for you
Jesus died for your sins and paid a debt you can never pay. He has made a way for you to be right with God. Your sin is keeping you from Him. The bible says, “God is light and in Him there is no darkness,” which means He has no sin in Him and He can’t abide with sin, but in Him is life. Sin brings death and separation from Him in a place called hell. The word of God also says, “God is patient and desires that none should perish but all would come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) He will not force you and will not take away your free will; its your choice.
He does not send us to hell. John 3:16 says He loves you, but if we reject the saving grace of Jesus, we condemn ourselves. We are saying to Him “I want nothing to do with you.” So, He will honor your request. You will be in a place where sin reigns and evil reigns supreme. If He is knocking on the door of your heart ask Him to forgive you of your sins and be the Lord of your life and ask that His Spirit come and dwell within you that you will be born again and given a new heart.
