Be Kind to Your Enzymes
How our bodies go about their business is a mystery-at least to most of us. And how could it be any other way? Most of what we’ve been taught is wrong, and doctors sure don’t explain much.
We’re on our own here. We need a little insight into what’s going on that makes us feel so bad so much of the time-and how we can avoid dread diseases.
It’s not even hard once you get clued in. So let the clues begin!
Enzymes keep things going
Today, let’s talk about one of the basics: The enzymes in our body that keep things going.
What’s an enzyme? Simply speaking, enzymes are proteins that spur chemical reactions to completion. Catalysts that make things happen.
Our bodies function via enzyme action. Thousands of different enzymes make millions of chemical reactions possible, which, in turn, make life possible.
Now, don’t just say “swell” and quit reading. Your enzymes are begging for help to make it to the finish line.
First off, we don’t get enough protein. Since enzymes, which do all the heavy lifting to keep us alive, let alone healthy, come from protein, we’re asking for trouble if we don’t eat enough protein.
And if we don’t get enough protein? Our bodies nip it out of our muscles. It’s kind of like cannibalism. That sort of thing never turns out well.
Bottom line: We need protein.
And not just any protein will do. Skip the soy protein and pea protein. And despite breathless articles to the contrary, egg white protein doesn’t have as much oomph as the whole egg. The egg yolk is, in fact, the perfect protein. Followed closely by beef.
You need protein with every meal, especially breakfast. And all meals should include saturated fat so your body can absorb nutrition. No fat means no nutrition.
How much protein do we need? Well, while disease statistics make it clear that most of us don’t get enough, the poobahs can’t agree on how much is enough. While everybody argues, I’ll pull some facts out from all the noise-but I’ll do that next time. It takes some explaining.
Enzymes use energy
Second problem? This whirlwind of activity means enzymes use up a lot of energy.
If our bodies don’t get the nutrition they need, the gears slow down, grinding as they go. We may not have a clue about what’s happening. All we know is we’re dragging. No energy, not much joy. But plenty of stress. And fatigue. Some days it feels as though we were born tired.
Should you decide you want to leave fatigue behind and head for victory lane, the first pit stop to make is to set up-and live by-a good vitamin/mineral program for yourself. Vitamins and minerals boost enzyme activity big time
Want an example? Magnesium participates in more than 300 different enzyme actions over and over, every day, day in, day out, year after year. Almost all of us are deficient in magnesium, which may be why muscle aches and fatigue are so common. Pumping up your magnesium to where it should be lets a lot of enzymes do what they were born to do.
And magnesium just begins the list of things most of us need to pump up.
Bottom line? Support your local enzymes with adequate vitamins and minerals.
Making sure your body’s enzyme interactions work well, with power and panache, is critical. Literally.
And it’s simple to do. First, get plenty of good protein. Second, back up the protein with a good vitamin/mineral program. How hard is that?
