Are You Purified? The Process of Purification
Read 1 Peter 1:22-23 NKJV below:
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever…
Are you Purified?
Do you see the process Peter describes?
Purified soul -> obeying the truth -> through the Spirit -> In love of brethren -> Born again -> not of corruptible seed but incorruptible -> through the word of God
Did you notice the word “purified” is past tense? That means, it is already done, complete, finished, accomplished.
Notice “obeying” is a continuation of doing what is right always. It means to always obey.
But just so we don’t think we can continue by our own power, Peter adds “through the Spirit of sincere love.” It is by God’s power working in us that this can be accomplished!
And it His power that enables us to “love one another fervently with a pure heart.”
This leads us to the “born again” part. Again this description is past tense. The old is gone and the new has come. It is finished, completed, and accomplished already by God.
Our being born again is of lasting value. It is not something that can be corrupted. It is incorruptible. Our true life is hidden with Christ in the heaven. We are no longer subject to the things that corrupt, erode, or decay. We now have incorruptible seed, which is pure, undefiled, the way God intended.
All this is accomplished “through the word of God.” Which is powerful, active, and sharper than a two-edged sword. Able to discern the thoughts and intents of man. Able to divide between bone and marrow. The word of God brings clarity and straightens us out.
O Father, thank you for who you are. Thank you for your great work in and through us by the power of Spirit. Thank you for our new life that enables us to love others with a pure heart. In Jesus’ name Amen.
